Lixit Water Bottles for Birds
We use and recommend water bottles because they are more sanitary and provide clean, fresh water at all times to our birds. Bacterial counts double every 2 hours. If you are unable to change your bird's water and disinfect the bowl several times daily, you too should be providing your bird with a water bottle. Birds are very easy to switch to a water bottle.

If you have a feathered friend or two as a pet, you can certainly relate to the "parrot soup" phrase in my title. Birds love to take food and treats from their food dishes and dunk them into their water dishes. Some things get dropped in and left to soften them up, and tidbits or crumbs all fall inside too. Several hours later you will observe what is commonly called "parrot soup" in the water bowl.
Since I raise parrots of all sizes, I quickly learned the solution to this annoying problem. I work full time and don't clean cages until evening and the soup is very well done by that time and in some instances even thick. This leaves the parrots without fresh water and in the heat of the summer, this is not good--even if the parrots are in a climate controlled aviary. All animals need and require fresh water to be available --at all times!
Lixit Glass Bird Water Bottle, 32 Oz.--Medium
I picked up several of the Lixit Glass Bird Water Bottles, 32 Oz.--Medium for my medium size parrots. I use this size water bottle for quakers, green cheek conures, and african greys for the most part.
The bottles are made of glass and sit in a stainless steel holder that attaches to the outside of the cage. This makes changing and/or refilling the water bottles very easy and faster than removing a water bowl, cleaning it and then refilling with water and replacing it. Also, I love the fact that you can easily see how much water is left in the bottle. Of course, the best part is no more parrot soup!
Lixit Glass Bird Water Bottle, 32 Oz.--Medium dispenses the water to birds by a stainless steel tube. The tube has a stainless steel ball inside that the parrots nudge with their tongues to get water.
Words Of Caution
When changing any size hookbills or softbills from a water dish to a water bottle should be done slowly. By this I mean, do not take the water bowl out when you put in the new water bottle. This is new and they may not figure out this is where they will get their water from. By placing the water bottle directly above their water dish, the birds can easily find the new bottle. Once you see they are drinking fine from the water bottle, you can then remove the water dish.
Another caution that I have heard of for years and experienced first hand also is that some parrots will entertain themselves by pushing food up the tubes. This will stop up the water bottle and cut off their water supply and can lead to death. Be sure to inspect your bird's water bottles daily and make sure they are in proper working order.
If your water bottle starts leaking, you may want to check to see is the rubber washer is missing that sits in the screw on cap. I have had several of the washers fall out during cleaning and refilling the water bottles.
Cleaning
It is recommended that you clean the water bottles at least once per week. If you have a parrot that stuffs things up the tube of the water bottle, you will have to clean the bottle more often. This will lead to bacteria entering the water supply.
The Lixit Glass Bird Water Bottles, 32 Oz.--Medium are easy to clean. The glass bottles can go in the dishwasher or you can clean them by hand with a bottle brush, soap and water.
Overall
Lixit Glass Bird Water Bottles come in various sizes for different size parrots. They really make the feeding routine easier and quicker for me with the ease of use. I also like the fact that I know my birds have clean water all day long! Cleaning up messy "parrot soup" is a thing of the past and "for the birds". I give Lixit Glass Bird Water Bottles, 32 Oz.--Medium 5 Stars.
